- Abstract:
- Waste incineration plants (WIPs) are currently becoming an important element of the integrated municipal solid waste (MSW) management system in Russia. This article examines the issues of processing and transformation of products formed during MSW incineration in the environment. The results of a comparative analysis of literature data on the presence of pollutants in slag and ash residues from MSW incineration are presented, from the perspective of the environmental and hygienic aspects of their disposal or storage. Slag and fly ash from WIP No. 3 were taken as the object of research. In order to determine the possibility of safe use and disposal of these wastes, the presence of pollutants in slag and ash residues was determined using a complex of mineralogical and analytical methods. An unambiguous conclusion was drawn about a significant excess of heavy metal content in fly ash (in relation to hygienic standards for soils), and a high migration capacity of heavy metals from ash to soils and into surface and groundwater sources was demonstrated. A comparison of the contents of heavy metals and trace elements in aqueous extracts of slag with the maximum permissible concentrations (MPCs) of chemical substances in water bodies showed that, for all major environmentally controlled elements, the concentrations are much lower than the MPCs. The results of leaching tests on the studied slag indicate that the transfer of heavy metals from the slag is practically non-existent, which means that the slag is stable and may be suitable for recycling without any restrictions.
