- Abstract:
- Almost half of Russian surface mines produce coal in the methane zone. This actualizes research in the field of methane concentration control in the working zone of the open pit, as well as in the sanitary zone. There are point, linear, and area sources of methane at surface mines. The key parameters affecting methane distribution are terrain conditions, shape of the cut and airflow direction. Possible methane concentrations were estimated for an average cut operating in a methane zone with airflow direction along the length of the cut and perpendicular to it. Drilling and blasting wells, coal and host rock outcrops, and transported mineral flows were considered as sources of methane. It was revealed that at the boundary of the sanitary zone methane maximum permissible concentration exceedance is not expected. It has been determined that ventilation units provide the necessary amount of air to dilute the methane. In this regard, the emphasis when choosing measures to intensify mass transfer was placed on the geometric parameters of the section, as well as on the power and energy consumption of installations.
